Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fort Stockton District Curriculum
The science curriculum at Fort Stockton Independent School District include the subjects of biology, chemistry, physics, ecology and help students develop their understanding of how scientists investigate natural phenomenon. Each of the students spend time learning from first-hand experiences in the field and in laboratory hours. They are shown different ways to investigate the world around them.
Geography is a part of the Social Studies curriculum. Students begin this study by learning words that have to do with directions. Many of the words are familiar, such as near, or far, but some they need to learn what they mean like north, or west. After they have mastered these words, they begin to become familiar with the world around them beginning with the state of Texas. They discover the landmarks, events and settlement patterns that led to people settling here. They then learn the same about the United States and countries around the world. The unifying factors that the students learn about the world in geography help them feel they have commonalities with people near and far.

Chalk Talk: Building Independence in Children
Children are born looking to parents and other adults for help in everything they do. However, to become successful adults these same children need to learn independence. Parents can help on this journey. By the time children begin school, they should begin to be responsible for their own possessions. They can be helped by setting up an area for them to place school items so they will have the same place to collect and place items. Another way to help with independence is to allow them to save for items they would like. They can earn this money by being responsible for chores and then they can do extra chores to earn money. Show them how to save so much of their money for long-term goals, to keep money for daily expenses and to place money aside for items in their near future. By incorporating each of these into the child's life, they will be more prepared for life as they mature.
