Fort Thomas District and Curriculum
Fort Thomas Independent Schools follow the curriculum set by the Kentucky Department of Education. The primary goal of the curriculum is to provide a clear base of knowledge for students in their core subjects upon which they are able to develop a range of advanced, conceptual understanding from. Beyond that, the curriculum provides for electives and career-oriented courses in areas like art, music and technology that can help students pursue their own interests.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fort Thomas District Curriculum
In English/Language Arts, The Kentucky Writing Program is in place to help teachers guide your child to be a better writer through consistent feedback and analysis of your child’s skills. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning to write by developing skills that allow them to construct work by a clear process. Throughout the schools, each student’s writing is kept in a portfolio and analyzed regularly, displaying their growth in abilities.
In Science and Mathematics, a program is in place to help your child’s teacher reach the goals and objectives that your child should meet to move through the grades regularly and graduate. Goals in the subjects are set at each grade level and your child’s teacher works to meet these. For instance, in Algebra the early concepts are taught in primary school and then developed throughout the years so that students can work with topics like equations and algorithms.

- Athletic Programs - The Highlands High School football team has enjoyed state success for over 20 years. Nationally they have ranked eight times. They have enjoyed thirteen undefeated seasons.
- Performing Arts - Highlands Middle School has an active theater group that presents modern theater pieces to the community with great success. Recently, they presented School House Rock Live which was well received.
- Cum Laude Society - Highlands High School is also ranked nationally in Academics. About 90% of its students continue on to college and there is a chapter of the prestigious Cum Laude Society at the school.
- Blue Ribbon School - Highlands High School was also named a No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School which is the highest award that can be given to a school from the US Department of Education.

Everyone needs to try to fit into the team without losing their individual strengths. If you are a leader, try to bring the ideas out of the quieter people. If you are a follower, try to assert your ideas sometimes. When everyone works together better things happen.
