Fort Wayne District and Curriculum
Fort Wayne Community Schools follow the curriculum prescribed by the Indiana Department of Education. We follow the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English/Language Arts and Mathematics. Commonly known as Indiana’s Common Core Standards (INCC), the curriculum provides clear and consistent understanding of the skills that students are expected to learn. This helps parents and teachers to know what they must to help the children meet academic requirements. The Mathematics curriculum of Fort Wayne Community Schools is based on INCC. One of the goals for Mathematics is that students should be able to do, understand and apply mathematics, both inside and outside the classroom. Teachers and students must shift their thinking about elements that constitute an effective mathematics classroom. Parental involvement is an essential element of this program.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fort Wayne District Curriculum
The aim of the English and Language Art curriculum is to provide fundamental skills for lifelong learning and problem solving in today’s multifaceted technological world. Fort Wayne Community Schools uses its excellent resources to engage students in the developing an excellent level of reading and writing skills. Students follow a scientifically developed reading plan that develops their reading skills from basic levels in elementary school to classical and contemporary text in later classes.
At Fort Wayne Community School, the science curriculum in elementary grades is designed to help all students develop a critical basic knowledge and skills, interests and intellect that will result in prolific efforts to study and comprehend science thoroughly in later grades. Scientific literacy is a necessity for every student at Fort Wayne Community Schools.

- Continued Improvement in State Tests - For the third consecutive years Fort Wayne Community School has across-the-board improvement on the state standardized test that evaluates students in Mathematics, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies. 2012 ISTEP+ results show that the data-driven curriculum and highly efficient staff provide instruction that educates children beyond academics to help each child become a responsible citizen.
- Riley Children Foundation - Fort Wayne Community School raised nearly $32,000 for the Riley Children Foundation during the academic session 2011-12 and was as a result given the designation, Riley Corporation. The fundraising is an ongoing activity at FWCS as part of the social awareness program, which has raised more than $125,000 for Riley since 2008.
- Helen Brown Natatorium - Within the Fort Wayne community, the Helen Brown Natatorium offers a range of classes for students and adults who are interested in swimming, diving and water rescue. Classes for all ages occur throughout the year and the facilities provide programs to help students achieve their athletic goals.
