Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fort Worth District Curriculum

Mathematics, at Fort Worth schools, begins by introducing students to numbers, addition and subtraction. After the mastering of these skills, students then learn how to complete other skills that they will use every day, such as counting money, telling time and understanding fractions. In fourth grade students begin to use the Envision program to enforce their math skills. This program allows students to use games and investigation to strengthen problem solving processes used in math.

The reading curriculum at Fort Worth schools introduces students to the subject by showing how different books can show the same topics in different ways. They also begin to learn how each author uses a different voice when writing. As students go on, they use Accelerated Reading to help reach students at their current reading level and helping them to progress through stages. By fourth grade they are reading novels in literary groups. This allows them to learn how to discuss, think critically and be self-expressive, either orally or through journals.

Encouraging higher-level thinking skills and independence are of utmost importance in my instruction, as I aim to develop leaders who lead by example and through critical thinking. Every person has the capacity to be an influential leader given the appropriate guidance utilizing an individual’s unique gifts and passions.
In my own education I have found that every individual requires learning methods unique to them and that each subject requires even more unique methods. From this experience I believe that in teaching I must work to find the students’ best method of learning and most of all to make learning fun and useful. I hope to not only teach but to inspire further curiosity in the students mind.
I believe every child should have the equal opportunity to acquire new knowledge and learn new skills. Students who have a strong desire to learn should be free of socioeconomic barriers.

Chalk Talk: Fourth Grade Expectations

Students that enter the fourth grade have the foundations for learning that they will need for the remainder of their education. Now it is time to go a little more in-depth. This is the grade where students are no longer learning to read but they are reading to learn. This means that in fourth grade students are learning how to understand what they read. Writing skills also grow as students learn how to write with different kinds of sentence structures, and learn how to express thoughts coherently. Students learn how to do even more with fractions, decimals, division, measurement and geometry this year. Then in Social Studies and Science they learn how to use their reading and mathematic skills in these subjects. They may need to calculate charges, or create detailed reports in Social Studies. Through each of these areas parents can be tremendous help. Just communicate with the teacher to see how you can aid your student.
