Fredericton District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Fredericton public schools use the curriculum that was developed by the province’s Department of Education. The curriculum is a framework for all the subject areas that describes what children are expected to learn in terms of practical skills and knowledge as well as ways of critically thinking about the topic. Curriculum review and development is a continuous process that takes into accounts changes in society like the increased use of technology, emerging areas of study such as sustainability practices, and programs that speak to the interests of students like the arts programs.
We currently cover the following Fredericton-area school district: School District 18.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fredericton District Curriculum
The English Language Arts curriculum emphasizes reading and writing with the aim of developing strong abilities in both for all students. In writing, students are instructed in developing content, organization, word choice, voice/tone, sentence structure and language conventions. They learn about techniques like figurative language, symbolism and metaphor, and hyperbole through their reading assignments and become able to work literacy devices into their own writing. Reading for information and to understand both the world and themselves is another key element of the Language Arts curriculum, and allows for a recursive process whereby students reflect on their reading in their writing.
The math curriculum provides students with a broad base during the elementary years that is compounded by increasingly complex problem-solving strategies over the years. In Math 9, students are re-introduced to these concepts in preparation for courses in Geometry, Measurement and Finance and Number, Relations and Functions 10. Additionally, math students acquire essential skills required to perform mathematical work. Students learn to attend to precision, utilize appropriate tools, and reason in an abstract and quantitative manner.

Chalk Talk: Being Involved in Education
Parental involvement is a critical aspect of any child’s education. In fact, research shows that the level of parental involvement is the number one indicator of a child’s success in school. By creating a home environment that is supportive of and conducive to learning, parents ensure their children will have a better chance of academic success. Students with actively engaged parents achieve better overall grades, have higher test scores, and complete their homework on a more consistent basis. Children whose parents support their learning also demonstrate higher levels of self-esteem and self-confidence. Improved attendance and a reduced number of behavioral issues are other important benefits children experience when their parents take an active role in their education.
