Chalk Talk: Talking About the News With Children

Children are bombarded by the news, often repeatedly. They can oftentimes feel overwhelmed with the scenes they see or the words they heard. To help them understand, limit the amount of material they are presented with, especially young children. The young may not realize that the news program is repeating the same event and the repeated viewing can escalate their fear. After the viewing, the parent should take a few minutes to talk about what was seen, but do not over-explain. The use of simple words and limited time can help ease some of the fear. After this, parents need to realize that the fear the child feels is real and needs to be recognized, oftentimes a hug and a smile can help a child feel better.
