Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fremont District Curriculum

The core subjects of Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics are taught according to the Nebraska State Learning Standards, and assessments are given on a regular basis to keep track of student growth. Within the K-12 Math learning strands, concepts learned include: showing relationships among numbers, performing operations using whole numbers, integers, and fractions, incorporating reasoning skills into math by estimating the answers to a variety of problems, and making sure the answers make sense.

In Reading, standards include building strong literacy skills and means for vocabulary acquisition, using schema to make connections to text (fiction and non-fiction), and reading for pleasure. Reading for information is a significant part of the curriculum and students are exposed to a range of subjects and media types through this focus. Writing is increasing in its importance, as a means of personal expression and a necessary skill for advanced learning.
