Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fresno District Curriculum

The schools of Fresno use standards-based curriculum that describes what students are expected to learn within each subject, each year. For the core subjects of Math and Language Arts, the schools follow the Common Core Standards. These are standards that describe the major areas of learning in each subject and the skills that bring about the ability to master the subject. The statewide assessments measure student performance on the objectives laid out in the curriculum.

The Sciences use curriculum developed by California educators and scientists that describe the learning areas within the fields of science like earth science, biology, chemistry and physics. For more specialized programs, there are curriculum that describe the expected course of learning. These are developed by educators and professionals within the field. Students taking technology courses, therefore, benefit from a curriculum designed to help prepare them for future professional goals.

California Tutors

My personal philosophy in for teaching mathematics is: “Teach and encourage the students to ‘Discover’ the mathematical concepts by trying to answer the WHY’s of mathematics, rather than to simply show the students the HOW’s of mathematics.
One’s past does not have to negatively impact his or her future. This goal can be fulfilled in a welcoming, encouraging, and consistent classroom environment, where teasing and bullying will not be tolerated.
Teaching is the ability to translate subjects into a language that students can understand. Every student learns differently. Its our ability to identify that, and adjust our teaching accordingly. Every student has the ability to learn.

Interesting Facts

Fresno is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the USA and produces massive amounts of the country’s produce with its massive agricultural sector. Fresno is named after the California ash tree, which is its most visible inhabitant. Fresno means “ash tree” in Spanish. The ash tree is a scrubby tree and its scientific name is Fraxinus dipetala. It commonly grows along bodies of water, such as rivers. The small trees grow to a maximum of twenty-three feet. The ash tree is representative of this city and thus is present on the city’s flag.

Fresno was originally a part of Mexico. The Yokut tribes were the first settlers and at a point in time, there were 60 tribes in Fresno County. The area surrounding this county was first under Spanish control and then after winning independence, Mexico. Gabriel Moraga had explored Fresno in 1806 and this began Mexican development in Fresno. Following the Mexican War, Fresno became a part of America in 1846.

Fresno is known for its sunshine. On average, there are three hundred sunny days each year. On the not sunny days, another beauty arises. There is a unique fog called tule fog. This fog is very thick and usually appears during the wet season. The fog makes the landscape look more dramatic and beautiful.

Fresno is situated close to majority of the famous national parks in California. Examples include Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia. Yosemite consists of many unique rock formations. Kings Canyon consists of the Kings River, beautiful waterfalls and sparkling lakes. Sequoia is known for its humongous sequoia trees, such as the largest tree in the world, the General Sherman.

All of the raisins produced in the USA are grown in Fresno. In fact, Fresno supplies the world with half of its raisin supply. There is a legend that raisins were found out by accident in 1875 when a farmer forgot to pick his grapes and left them to dry on the vines. The vast amount of sunshine and the long growing seasons give the optimal conditions for producing raisins. The business is booming to the extent that around 355,000 tons of raisins are produced every year. Tourists can get a load of these sweet raisins at the Selma Raisin Festival in Fresno County, where there are food, a carnival, art exhibits and competitions.

Chalk Talk: Adaptation

As the school term slowly approaches towards midterm season, many students are starting to become busier and frantic about their upcoming examinations. For most students, midterm season is something that they are used to; however for others this is the first big examination of their university career and they can’t help but to feel nervous and anxious. Once their grades are returned to them, students are often discouraged expecting that they would do better as they were top students in high school. Don’t worry you aren’t the only one, in fact a lot of students feel this way. What really differentiates more academically inclined students from a large group is the ability to adapt. The ability to adapt to change comes easy for some students, for other it is a difficult task. Remember not to compare yourself to others, and focus on yourself. Your hardwork will definitely pay off!
