Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Gainesville District Curriculum

According to the Sunshine State Standards based upon the Common Core Standards, students who have completed K-12th grade should know the following in Math: addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, measurement, geometry, algebra, fractions, decimals, data analysis, ratios, proportions, formulae, statistics, and exponents. Science in the K-12th grades focuses on scientific observation, the senses, matter, astronomy, energy, seasons, forces, the human body, earth science, life science, and physical science. Of course, knowledge in these areas is more general in the lower grades. However, if a student chooses to study a certain area more in-depth, he or she may do so in the upper grades.

Students who have completed K-12 Language Arts should have an understanding of reading, literature, informational texts, writing, speaking, and listening. The standards build upon one another, and students are exposed to a wide range of texts and types of writing so that they will be well-prepared for life upon graduation.
