Gainesville District and Curriculum

Alachua County Public Schools has several curriculum departments through which they offer enriched learning opportunities and promote individual achievement. Programs overseen by these curriculum include, Career and Technical Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), GED/Adult Education, Gifted and Magnet Programs, The elementary and secondary curricula are aligned with the Sunshine State Standards.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Gainesville District Curriculum

According to the Sunshine State Standards based upon the Common Core Standards, students who have completed K-12th grade should know the following in Math: addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, measurement, geometry, algebra, fractions, decimals, data analysis, ratios, proportions, formulae, statistics, and exponents. Science in the K-12th grades focuses on scientific observation, the senses, matter, astronomy, energy, seasons, forces, the human body, earth science, life science, and physical science. Of course, knowledge in these areas is more general in the lower grades. However, if a student chooses to study a certain area more in-depth, he or she may do so in the upper grades.

Students who have completed K-12 Language Arts should have an understanding of reading, literature, informational texts, writing, speaking, and listening. The standards build upon one another, and students are exposed to a wide range of texts and types of writing so that they will be well-prepared for life upon graduation.

Keeping Informed: Recent Gainesville Educational News

  • New Schools - Alachua County Public Schools debuts the first public school since 1999, and students say are giving the new facilities high grades. They also take great pride in the Manatees, the school mascot. This school will mark the emergence of next generation school facilities throughout the district.
  • Building Blocks - Students at Duval Fine Arts Elementary School learn valuable skills through the Building Blocks of Success Mentorship Program. More than 500 students have learned about socialization, decision-making, and goal setting. This program better equips them for their future.
  • STEM Learning - Students at Stephen Foster Elementary School incorporate geography, engineering, and artistic expression with classroom projects. These integrated project experiences are part of an improved magnet program that focuses on STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
