Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Garfield Heights District Curriculum

English programs highlight Accelerated Reader programs to students to help them become more literate and excel in reading and comprehension. The math curriculum forms an important part of learning and problem solving. Many resources are offered for students to practice improving their math skills in the summer. First graders are expected to identify and draw geometrical shapes and become familiarized with working with operations of numbers, money and time. As students progress into middle school, identifying patterns between graphs and geometrical shapes is important for skill development and independent problem solving.

Social Studies subjects emphasize great leaders and their contribution to society among different regions of the world. Students are expected to writer longer essays using research and be able to present their ideas in a clear and concise manner. The Science curriculum focuses on in-depth lab studies with science experiments using nature and the environment.

Chalk Talk: Discussing Family Values in Schools

Students often encounter in their Social Studies courses the focus on the family and its functions and importance. However, what students need to understand and accept is that the family has drastically changed. Likewise, curricula adapts to the changing demographics of society and the structure of the family. Family no longer is restricted to those of blood kin but can mean anyone in our wider social circle with whom we share a deep emotional bond and helps us to keep our growth intact. The definitions of family are ever changing as we have seen this from decade to decade. And while there is significant debate about what a "true family" depicts, we can say that family is what we make of it. However, the principles and values of honesty, integrity, sharing, and caring encompass family.
