Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Gautier District Curriculum
Literature is an important element in the Gautier Schools curriculum. In the early years the children learn how to include key details when retelling stories, as well as thinking maps. When these students reach high school they are able to tackle complex materials due to the education they have up to this point. In high school, they read works like “Odyssey” and “Romeo and Juliet.”
In the area of Social Studies, children begin by learning about the community around them, then they gradually expand their boundaries. They begin to learn about symbols, icons and traditions locally, state-wide and nationally. When they are in high school these students already are familiar with the topics that they will study more deeply. In high school, the students can decide on whether to study the major turning points in world history, or the systems and processes of the United States Government. They can also study specific periods in the United States History, developing an understanding of change and continuity.

Chalk Talk: Types of Homework
Teachers assign homework for different purposes. Many times homework is meant to be a way to have children practice what has been taught in class. This type of homework helps students master skills and reinforces material. Preparation is another type of homework that may be assigned to introduce a topic that is to be taught in the future. This helps the teacher find out what is known by the students so the lessons can be channeled in the right direction. When homework is assigned that requires a student to take skills they know and apply them in other areas, which is called extension homework. The last type of homework is integration homework. In this type students are asked to use many skills that have been taught to complete one task. This is usually a book report, research project, science project or creative writing piece.
