Georgetown District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in Georgetown follow the Ontario Curriculum, a comprehensive framework of learning expectations in all subjects at each grade level. The curriculum describes the skills that students need to develop in order to be proficient in each subject. Beyond that, the concepts associated with each subject – like learning about the scientific process in Biology, or government structure in Social Studies – are also described. The curriculum also branches out into the student success programs that help keep students engaged by drawing upon common interests. Language programs, international studies, outdoor education, and cooperative education are some of the many programs covered in the Ontario Curriculum.

We currently cover the following Georgetown-area school districts: Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Georgetown District Curriculum

In all subjects, students are expected to clearly communicate their ideas in writing, oral speech, and artistic expression. In writing, they should have well-developed ideas, organization, effective use of language, and mastery of the conventions of the English language. Oral communication should include consistent eye contact, confident body language, clear voice and tone, an accurate and complete explanation of the content, information presented in an organized fashion, the use of visual aids that enhance the presentation, and correct use of grammar and word choice.

Students are also expected to develop problem-solving skills that will assist them in determining the best way to solve a problem and give them a base for working with step-by-step solutions. Students are expected to develop an understanding of the importance of precision and also see how predictions can be made by extrapolating quantitative data. They also learn about the ways in which math is used in technology which provides a strong academic background for students interested in further pursuing this field of study.

Chalk Talk: Middle School Transitions

As a child enters middle school they are faced with many changes. This is the time of many physical and emotional changes and often teens are unsure of how to deal with them or even that they are occurring. At this same time, these teens may no longer see the friends they have gone to school with previously, plus with the new adventure of switching classrooms for each subject, they may not feel the support or individual attention they were receiving before. One other area of transition is the challenges they face in their schoolwork. They are expected to understand how to have the independence to work on different assignment, be organized and keep a planner. Any one of these changes can be daunting, but when faced with all of them teenagers need support from home and their peers.
