Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Georgina District Curriculum
The Ontario Curriculum describes the types of higher order thinking skills that students develop by mastering these standards. The curriculum describes the types of skills in each subject - like developing the writing process - and how the skill will bring about thinking strategies like self-reflection and analysis. Providing a description of the concepts that students should learn in their classes helps to bring about these outcomes.
The career programs available at the secondary level help students develop skills that are in demand in the workforce, both locally and internationally. The curriculum includes an entrepreneurship component that introduces students to the roles and responsibilities of small business owners. Students learn about the scope of entrepreneurship, including the personal qualities characteristic of a successful business owner, as well as the long-term impacts that small businesses have on the nation’s economy.

Chalk Talk: Helping a Child Cope with Stress
Not all stress is bad. Stressful situations test our character and teach us valuable life lessons. But children today face academic pressures unprecedented to any other generation. From kindergarten to twelfth grade, students face the demands of constant high-stakes testing and the importance of getting into a top-notch school. Added to this are financial burdens, family issues, and American competitiveness. Not all students will crumble under this pressure, but it is important for parents and teachers to identify students who may struggle under the weight of their stress. It is equally important for adults to help each child and embrace his or her qualities, regardless of their coping mechanisms. Signs that a child needs help are excessive weight gain or loss, substance use, excessive fear, issues with sleeping, self-harm, and academic problems.
