The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics is built on the foundation that there are skills and content that all students must know at specific grade levels. Math is considered a coherent body of knowledge that is made up of interconnected concepts and skills. There are a few important shifts in the new Common Core Math Curriculum. There is a greater focus on fewer topics. Teachers and students are now being asked to focus in-depth on certain topics and build a solid foundation of understanding. Gone are the days of covering too many topics only slightly. Another important shift if that of coherence. The standards are now designed to progress from grade to grade. Topics and thinking are connected across grade levels and standards are extensions of previous learning. For more information on Common Core, check out the Common Core website.
