Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Glenpool District Curriculum

In Mathematics, fractions are introduced to the math students in the primary grades. Fractions explain the relationship of part-to-whole to the students, and the instructors begin teaching this concept very gradually. The teachers rely on manipulatives and shaded diagrams to instruct the students about fractions, and also use various technologies, such as the Smartboard or any fraction-demonstrating software, or devices such as iPads or iPods.

In English Language Arts, standards taught include the writing process. The students are taught, when beginning a writing piece, to list topics they are interested in writing about. They are instructed to go about organizing their thoughts by deciding on a specific topic and making an outline of what they plan to write in their paper. From this point, the young writers then begin their rough draft, sharing it with their instructor and peers, revising this draft, editing and proofreading this draft, and then rewriting it or typing it.

Chalk Talk: The Culture of the School System

Some school systems must focus on the culture that is within their schools, such as Native American students and the community members. Oftentimes the school system finds the need to incorporate societal and cultural material within the schools to meet the needs of all of the learners. This helps with acceptance and understanding of all students, while increasing the knowledge of the rich history of the school system’s community.
