Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Glens Falls District Curriculum
At the elementary school level, students learning Language Arts begin by learning how to read, write, listen and speak in the English language. These are broken out into two strands – the skills strand which is learning how to read and write and the listening, learning and speaking strands where students learn from listening to read aloud books to acquire vocabulary, and knowledge and then discuss what they have listened to. Later, the focus is also on literacy, critical analysis and being able to write both creative writing and expository writing.
In Mathematics, students at all grade levels focus on becoming mathematically literate and learn to use math in everyday activities. Computational skills, algebra and geometry are studied in elementary school, middle school and high school. The aim is to study fewer mathematical topics but to provide in depth mastery of the studied topics. In high school, students also prepare for the five Regents exams that students must pass to receive a Regents diploma.

The Carolina Coastal Science website for kids is specifically designed to teach children in Elementary, and Middle School about science in coastal regions. On the website kids can look at the how the coast is different in each region of the Carolina Coast. There are questions on how to handle different topics such as whether to relocate a lighthouse and what to do about a resort that is falling into the sea. Students can go through these inquiries step by step and analyze different answers to the projects. There is also a Carolina Coastal Photojournal which contains QuickTime movies.
