Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Gonzales District Curriculum

The Ascension Parish School District utilizes the state mandated Common Core State Standards for setting school curriculum. Common Core is not a curriculum but a set of expectations for students particularly in the areas of Mathematics and English and Language Arts (ELA). In Mathematics, students learn core foundational math subjects at a deep level of understanding including arithmetic, algebra, statistics, geometry, measurement and proportional reasoning. Students are expected to gain the knowledge on how to apply what they have learned to higher math and to real life scenarios.

In ELA, students learn the English language through learning to read, write, speak and listen in the development of strong verbal and written communication skills. Students read both informational text and literature as reading material so that they are prepared for the types of reading that may be required in college or as private citizens.

Chalk Talk: Learn about the Civil War

The Civil War continues to teach us about what can happen when divisiveness in a country reaches great levels. Students can gain a good understanding of America’s Civil War at the Civil War Home Page dedicated to the participants of the war from both sides. The site which is recommended for students by the American Library Association contains links to a variety of information on the war including original documents such as letters and diaries, photos, official records of individual battles written by the commanding generals of both armies, and a variety of maps of battles. The most visited link on the site is to a Civil War Photo Gallery which contains over 1200 images of cities, individuals including Abraham Lincoln and other notable people, civilians, flags, hospitals, and photos of life in the military and on the battle field. Not for young children but a great resource for high school students as they study the War Between the States.
