Goodyear District and Curriculum

The children in the Goodyear area of Arizona are served by several school districts: three elementary school districts; Avondale, Liberty and Litchfield, and two high school districts; Agua Fria Union and Buckeye Union. Altogether, the school districts educate a student body of over 10,000 children grades K to 12. In order to meet the educational demands of this large and diverse population, the school districts begin their programs early with a broad-based curriculum at every grade level. Each school adheres to the Core State Standards of the Arizona Department of Education, not only in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, but for all subjects: Science, Social Studies, World Languages, Computers and Technology, Music/Fine Arts and Physical and Health Education.

We currently cover the following Goodyear-area school district: Agua Fria Unified High School District, Avondale Unified Elementary School District, Buckeye Union High School District, Liberty Elementary School District and Litchfield Elementary School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Goodyear District Curriculum

All of the school districts are dedicated to their student’s success and challenge their students with a curriculum filled with
rigorous instructional programing. The teachers and supporting staff members in every school are highly-qualified, dedicated and
use the latest educational practices and methods in the classrooms. The school districts monitor each child’s progress with periodic
assessments, but also provide alternative educational environments for those students who may not fit into the traditional classroom
environment. Their overall goals are to ensure that every student masters the content of the curriculum in their grade level, to
ensure that each child has the skills and knowledge to move to the next level, and prepare each child so the he or she can achieve
academic success. The children of Goodyear will be provided with an excellent education to prepare them to live, work and succeed in a global community.

Keeping Informed: Recent Goodyear Educational News

  • Avondale Elementary School Teaches Character - Desert Thunder, one of the elementary schools in the Avondale Unified School District, is teaching their students lessons in a subject that goes well beyond the boundaries of the classroom: the subject of character. As part of a program called Character Counts, the school has implemented the teaching of six traits of good character, or Pillars of Character: Caring, Citizenship, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility and Trustworthiness. Every month, the entire school: students, teachers and staff members, focus on one of the pillars, participating in activities and discussing the topic in class. As the students demonstrate their knowledge and exemplify each pillar, they are recognized with small rewards and incentives. Just one more example of excellent schools doing extraordinary things for the students of Goodyear.
  • There's an App for That! - For those parents in the Liberty Elementary School District who own a mobile device (either an Android or an Apple), Infinite Campus has created and released an application for you. Parents can download this application to grant access to the school district's parent portal, which will allow you to view your child's grades, attendance, schedule and even current assignments. You can download the Mobile Portal Application from any of the following App stores: Amazon Appstore for Android, Google Play or App Store. However, parents are encouraged to contact your child's school office to find out more information about the program, and to request an access code for your child or children.
  • AdoptAClassroom.org Recognize Avondale Teacher - Two organizations, OfficeMax and AdoptAClassroom.org joined forces to create a program called "A Day Made Better." This program awards classroom teacher with school supplies from all over the United States in an effort to bring attention to the issue of classrooms being funded by teachers. Early in the school year, Barbara Burnett, a 6th Grade Math Teacher at Centerra Mirage School in the Avondale Elementary School District was presented with $1,000 worth of office and school supplies through "A Day Made Better." Chalk Talk: The Importance of Teaching Nursery Rhymes to Early Readers

Recent educational studies show the impact of sounds and rhythms on young children. When young children are taught nursery rhymes, or hear songs and rhyming poems, their reading readiness becomes stronger. Young children hear the rhythms of the sounds, and begin to understand the patterns within words. The musical nature of nursery rhymes brings to life the story in a way similar to seeing a musical play or opera. Nursery rhymes are an invaluable tool for developing early literacy.
