Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Grain Valley District Curriculum

Grain Valley School District provides a safe, supportive educational environment in which students are expected to actively take part in their own education. Students read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts and are asked to write about them and discuss them in a critical manner. Students must present their ideas using evidence and support, so that they aren’t simply sharing unfounded opinions, but can back up their claims and present well-reasoned observations.

Science classes teach problem-solving skills with real-world observations, and math classes focus on the nuts and bolts of mathematical concepts so that students have a firm foundation of understanding. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and are challenged so that they remain interested. This rigorous curriculum will prepare students for success in college and their careers.

Chalk Talk: Community Colleges

There are many advantages to a community college some students might not have considered. Cost is the main one, of course; community colleges cost a tenth of what even public colleges cost. Community colleges provide mostly basic-level classes; the classes pretty much all students have to take their freshman and sophomore years. This means that in larger colleges, these classes are very crowded. Community colleges offer smaller class sizes, more comparable to what students had in high school. This can be very helpful for many students, as it helps them pay attention, and it means the instructor is more accessible.
