Grand Rapids District and Curriculum
K-12 students in Grand Rapids attend school in Independent School District 318. The district is committed to fostering a lifelong love of learning in each student. This is accomplished through teaching and learning strategies that make students the center of education. In addition to a rigorous, yet interesting curriculum that keeps students engaged, School District 318 has implemented a variety of programs that promotes learning. The district’s curricular initiatives give students access to innovative projects that bring learning to life. These skills are just a small part of the district’s efforts to equip all students with the 21st century skills they need to be successful in college or in a career.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waconia District Curriculum
Grand Rapids’ middle school history students take part in an exploration of the post-Cold War era. Geopolitical dynamics, particularly those in Eastern Europe, are examined. Students identify ways that nations in the Soviet Bloc adapted to the new world order. Economic changes throughout the world are discussed as well. Learners identify how the U.S. economy grew as a result of expansion into formerly hostile areas. Students learn how TV, radio, and soon thereafter, the internet, were integral to sharing and spreading democratic ideas throughout the former Soviet Union.
The district’s science curriculum in Grand Rapids helps students develop a better understanding of earth-space science. Learners explore how weather and erosion contribute to breaking down natural materials such as rocks. Other forces, such as volcanic eruptions and rockslides, are examined for their role in shaping the way that the earth’s surface takes shape. Forms of renewable and non-renewable energies are identified as well, with students noting which of these resources are available locally.

Keeping Informed: Recent Waconia Educational News
- Students Study Engineering Lego Style - Southwest Elementary School students are learning engineering concepts by building with Legos. Students also get to practice their science, math, and technology skills as they create, test, and revise their Lego designs. Throughout the year there are also local competitions the students may attend.
- Students Host Climate Meeting - Independent School District 318 recently played host to a climate meeting entitled Woods, Water, and Workforce. The meeting included geography and agricultural resources students, as well as local experts in ecology, tourism, forestry, and wildlife. Students were able to take part in the conference and step into a professional role in environmental stewardship.
- Middle School Students Write to Pen Pals - The Spanish class at Robert J. Elkington Middle School participates in a unique activity each year. They write to pen pals in Guatemala City in order to practice their Spanish language skills. This project also helps students in both countries to recognize the differences and similarities between them.

Furthermore, studying a second language gives students insight into cultures and traditions with which they are unfamiliar. Also, it's a great career skill that students may find a wide range of uses for.
