Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Granger District Curriculum

Increased student attendance is key. The faculty provide rigorous and relevant instruction as well as a system of support to assist students academically, behaviorally, and socially. Students’ leadership skills are also encouraged in order to ensure that students develop the strength of character they’ll need to succeed.

Students are based given multiple forms of assessment such as tests, quizzes, projects, reports, collaborative work, presentations, laboratory reports and writing assignments. Teachers explain how grades will be determined at the beginning of the course and with each assignment so that students understand the expectations for their classes. Students are given many opportunities to produce work they can take pride in and, at the teacher's discretion, opportunities are given for self-correction and resubmission of work so that students can learn from their mistakes.

Chalk Talk: College Application Types

Of the multitude of college application types available, the biggest difference is due-date and response time. Some have very strict due-dates, such as Early Decision, whereas others like Rolling are much more open. There are also restrictions on some, such as Early Decision being binding, which means that students agree to attend that school if accepted, whereas Early Action, for example, offers students the freedom to choose where they want to attend. Early Decision and Early Action are both early, with a due-date of November 1st for Early Decision and November 15th for Early Action. Rolling doesn’t have a due date as such; rather, it opens at a certain point in the early fall and closes in the winter. Students are able to apply at any point during this time and receive a response in two to three weeks, typically, which gives Rolling the fastest turnaround of most application types.
