Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Grapevine District Curriculum

The reading curriculum at Grapevine schools centers around making each student a fluent reader. It begins by introducing students to books and how to hold them and read them. They also begin to learn to recognize sight words. Soon they are learning about genres and themes. Each of these skills help students learn to look at books and their characters in different ways. By middle schools students are able to prepare interviews from a main character’s perspective.

The Social Studies curriculum at Grapevine Schools shows how each culture contributes to the future. From the early-learning years up to graduation students learn about discoveries and ideas that their state of Texas made while fighting for freedom and then statehood. They also learn about the contributions made by the United States, which have been used throughout the world. This exploration continues with finding out about other cultures and how they have helped to change the world. These students graduate with the sense that the world has been united by these events.

Chalk Talk: Fourth Grade Math

Different states have different requirements for fourth grade math, but overall by the time a student finished fourth grade they will extend their knowledge in several areas while they learn new concepts. Some of the skills they will experience include being able to solve a math sentence with a variable, or reading, writing and renaming whole number to the millions and decimals to the hundredths. They also will be able to multiply larger numbers than third grade and become more comfortable solving division problems. Their mental skills in estimating will grow as will their knowledge of lines and angles. These items and more will help pave the way to next year and each year to come. Students can practice their math skills on many math games, through simple household tasks, and, most importantly, keeping up with the daily lessons and homework.
