Gravenhurst District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The curriculum followed in Gravenhursts’ schools is a standards-based and adaptive framework for teaching and learning. The standards reflect the essentials that students must learn at each grade level and are the basis for instructional planning and assessments. The curriculum is adaptive in that it can expand to create new courses and subject-specific programs based on local and global changes. All students are expected to have a strong foundation in traditional academics and all are offered the chance to choose the pathway most suited to their goals.
We currently cover the following Gravenhurst-area school districts: Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board and Trillium Lakelands District School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Gravenhurst District Curriculum
The academic subjects are the basis of formal assessments, particularly the exams in Math and English which are required for graduation. These formal assessments are used to measure that student learning in the years leading up to grades 9 and 10 have successfully instilled the foundation that students need in order to be properly prepared for their high school classes. Students take classes in Math, Science, English and History in which they learn fundamentals and then deepen their subject area knowledge. This process has been designed so that students develop key critical thinking strategies.
Beyond the standardized assessments which students take, they also have opportunities to conduct project-based learning in which the project is both an assessment and a means of instruction. When students are in high school, and have more chances to do independent and inter-disciplinary work, they will begin to use the subject area learning they have developed over the years in more integrated approaches.

Chalk Talk: Why Parental Involvement Is Important
As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, and educating a child is no different. Students need support and guidance from their parents in order to achieve their potential in school. In fact, research shows that the number one factor in a student’s success in school is the level of their parents’ involvement. Being involved in your child’s education means much more than asking if they have homework. Parents should be engaged with their child during their homework time, asking questions and offering assistance when needed. Similarly, when parents check in on due dates or examination dates, children are much more likely to be prepared. Students whose parents are engaged in their educational process earn better grades, have better attendance, and demonstrate an improved attitude about education than do their peers. Behavioral issues also diminish as the engagement of parents increases. By being involved in the process, parents can ensure that their child puts the best possible foot forward in their education.
