Chalk Talk: The Importance of Critical Thinking
“Critical thinking” is a phrase that is often heard in educational circles, but why is it important? Critical thinking is the ability to understand concepts and use those concepts to make connections and construct knowledge. It is not memorizing a series of facts just for the sake of it. It is not being able to fill in the correct blanks on a test. A critical thinker is able to solve a problem by pulling knowledge from other sources. It is essential that students learn how to think critically because it enables them to teach themselves almost anything. If a student relied only upon memorization, he or she would not know how to find answers when faced with a problem that does not involve previously memorized information. So, learning how to think and learn is one of the most important parts of an education.
