Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Greenville District Curriculum

Greenville Public Schools, in their Mathematics curriculum, help children become problem solvers beginning in the early grades. Within the first years, children begin to learn how to add and subtract by using drawings, claps, fingers, objects, mental pictures, verbal skills or equations. By starting out this way, students are better prepared as they progress through the grades. When they are in the sixth grade, they are able to substitute the correct number into an equation when one of the digits is replaced by a letter. They also begin to set up equations when presented with story problems.

To promote the children’s writing skills, students are introduced to the subject as they answer questions about books they have read, either in the class or at home. They are also taught to classify different works, sometimes by author or perhaps by the subject matter within the books. In the later grades, these students have the confidence and the tools to express their opinions on any subject matter based on information gathered through reading.

Chalk Talk: How to Spark a Child’s Interest in Reading

A rewarding way to spend time with a child is to take time to read together. Reading aloud is a great way to help increase a child’s love for books. Let the child pick out a book that they like, then find a nice, comfortable place to cuddle, and enjoy the words and pictures as the book takes you both on an adventure. While reading the book, take turns, so the child has practice time. Also, allow the child to ask questions while the book is being read. This helps foster their imagination and can make this time more enjoyable for the parent and the child.
