Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Gretna District Curriculum

The Common Core provides students with a clear set of academic expectations in English and Language Arts and Mathematics. In English and Language Arts, students focus on the basics of reading, writing, speaking and listening. There is an emphasis on students learning basic research skills and the ability to read for evidence. Both informational text and great literature is provided as reading material so that students have access to the types of reading material they may encounter on the job or in college.

In Mathematics students learn computational skills, algebra, geometry, statistics, proportional reasoning and measurement. The goal is for students to be math literate by the time they graduate high school with an ability to apply the math skills they have learned in real life situations. The math program is progressively difficult with students building on the skills they have learned the previous year.
