Grinnell District and Curriculum
The Grinnell-Newburg Community School District, consisting of three elementary schools, a middle school and Grinnell-Newburg High School is dedicated to student success and follows the Iowa Core curriculum to ensure that students meet the standards set by the state. However, the district also wants its students to prepare themselves for a lifetime of learning and encourages students and teachers to go beyond the core. The Iowa Core curriculum in math supports the Grinnell concept of life-long learners by including standards that teach students to use math in their life outside the classroom.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Grinnell District Curriculum
Within the math curriculum, students learn how they can apply the principles of geometry to a design issue or may use a graph to illustrate aspects of their financial spending. Likewise, the Iowa Core language arts curriculum expect students to not only develop reading, writing and speaking skills but also to develop media literacy and research skills.
This includes a large focus on informational texts and non-traditional writing which includes analysis and writing on literary non-fiction. Of course, teachers should not feel limited by the core curriculum and are encouraged to challenge students above and beyond what the state of Iowa suggests. The Iowa Core Curriculum allows for students to think and act independently and students are encouraged to go beyond the core curriculum and take advanced courses whenever they are offered.

Chalk Talk: Writing the Five Paragraph Essay
Across disciplines and grade levels there is a writing expectation that doesn’t seem to go away: the five paragraph essay. Whether it is an English essay or history term paper, the five paragraph essay is a logical way to organize your thoughts. First, develop a thesis statement that represents your argument in a single factual sentence. Next, decide on the best three approaches to prove that statement. Those three approaches will be the focus of your body paragraphs and should serve as the basis of your topic sentences. The key is to integrate and incorporate the evidence of your argument in your body paragraphs so that each sentence within the body paragraph supports the topic sentence, and each paragraph supports the thesis. As long as you are able to stay focused on your overall argument, you should be able to prove your thesis and satisfy the expectations of any teacher.
