Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Groesbeck District Curriculum

Through the language programs, children learn how to listen to and provide instructions, directions, and requests. To improve reading skills, students also answer simple questions about literary texts in small group and class discussions. In the context of discussions, students acquire effective listening skills as well, learning various words and phrases as they pertain to novel situations. Students compose letters to friends and family, conduct research and present information to classmates, and write short passages of informational text in order to hone their linguistic skills.

The fine arts curriculum introduces elementary aged students to the visual arts. Students work with a variety of mediums to produce art, including markers, paints, and clay. Learners acquire an appreciation for the cultural and historical contexts in which art is produced as well. Students look at art pieces from various points in history and explore how the time period influenced the way the artist presented his or her work. Learners compare and contrast various artistic styles as well, and gain an appreciation for individuality in art.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Audiobooks

Some students struggle mightily to read. Although there are many interventions that help struggling readers, many schools are adopting audiobooks as one of the strategies to help students improve their reading skills. Listening to an audiobook while reading along in the text helps reinforce the pronunciation and meaning of words. It also helps struggling readers to identify natural breaks in sentence flow and develop an understanding of how authors move smoothly from one idea to the next. Pairing listening to an audiobook with kinesthetic play further results in increased comprehension. Students can act out scenes in a story as they listen, or they can participate in games after each passage to get up and active in the learning process. Audiobooks also give students insight into how different people approach storytelling. This can help students draw comparisons between the perspectives of different narrators, and can also promote a creative approach to reading and understanding their readings.
