Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Guthrie District Curriculum
In Mathematics instruction, the students are taught to recognize the many connections that can be made between the concepts. Relating concrete objects or pictures to the actual problem or mathematical strand, such as the use of cubes of different colors to represent equations, looking at a picture graph to assimilate knowledge and draw conclusions, use sounds to depict patterning (such as clap-snap-clap to show an alternating pattern), and using real objects to show how fractions work (such as cutting a candy bar in two to show one-half).
In English Language Arts, the students learn strategies to interpret information. When reading non-fiction, the students in the elementary grades learn to use a variety of sources to validate, analyze, and draw conclusions about the specific material they are reading. The teacher instructs the students on how to take the information they have learned from the material, and to write summaries on this new information.

- Cotteral Elementary PTO - Cotteral Elementary Parent Teacher Organization is currently seeking a vice-president. The vice-president of the PTO directly helps the president by attending all meetings and consulting with parents and community members for events and fundraisers. If you are interested, please contact Cotteral Elementary.
- Summer Meal Program - The Summer Food Program has been a success with Guthrie Public School children. Children have been able to come and eat breakfast and lunch each day at no charge. It has been wonderful for the students to see each other and enjoy meals together. Any student of Guthrie Public Schools is welcome to come and eat!
- School-Age Care - School age care is important for working parents. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten school students, as well as older students are welcome to come to before school and after school care. Snacks are served, and the children can socialize and play, or work on homework. Both Cotteral and Fogarty Elementary Schools have openings; just contact the schools for more information!

Chalk Talk: What Is a Strand?
A strand is a specific learning objective that stems from a larger, more abstract learning objective. The Oklahoma Learning Objectives have broad statements of what the students are expected to learn, and under those statements are the specific details broken down for the teachers to understand and be sure that nothing from the broader objective statement is missed. Strands must be looked at by all of the instructors to ensure thorough teaching of each objective.
