Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Guymon District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, the comprehension of fiction works is a key factor in understanding and becoming better readers and thinkers. The students are immersed in many types of fiction, such as fairy tales, folktales, novels, and other fictional stories. This is done in grades K-12, and the level of difficulty ranges with each grade level and the students’ abilities. When teaching comprehension of fictional stories, the teacher gives the students many techniques to use, such as identifying the plot, story mappings, and sequencing the events.

In Mathematics, the instructors develop critical thinking skills through abstract mathematical concepts. Concepts such as algebra, geometry, word problems, and the higher mathematics of calculus and trigonometry are taught. These abstract strands of the objectives are more difficult than the concrete material (such as number sense and patterning) but, given the correct strategies, the students are able to learn and become more confident in these challenging mathematical concepts.

Chalk Talk: What Is a Media Center?

A media center is another term for library. Rather than the traditional library, though, the media center not only contains a wealth of books, but also has many technological devices that the teacher can check out and use in the classrooms. The media center also houses such items as projectors, computers, electronic books, video systems, and Smartboards for the librarian (sometimes referred to as the media specialist) to use with the classes that come up to library for their elective time. The media center is the “hub” of the school, meaning that many of the most recent technological equipment is found within.
