Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Haddonfield District Curriculum
The curriculum is based on the standards outlined in the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, which specify what students should learn, know and be able to do at each grade level in nine core subject areas. By completing the educational programs offered in the Haddonfield Public Schools, students acquire the knowledge and skills they need to become successful adults who contribute positively to their community.
An essential part of the science curriculum is developing an understanding that scientific study builds on itself and changes over time. Students learn that science involves a lot of questioning, collection of evidence and making determinations based on the information currently available. Students study past scientific theories and examine them in light of new scientific evidence. Doing so allows students to understand that science is a fluid subject whose ideas can change over time to reflect new information. Students also learn how to make predictions about scientific occurrences and identify ways in which their predictions may need to be revised.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of After School Programs
School districts across the nation have implemented after school enrichment programs with the purpose of helping students hone their academic skills and show improvement on assessments. While these programs have been highly successful in improving academic performance – students show gains in math performance, language skills, social skills and improved attendance – they demonstrate success in other areas as well. Students who participate in after school programs have higher self-esteem and self-confidence. The skills they learn to cope with stress and conflict help them to make healthy decisions and maintain positive relationships with their teachers, friends and family members. All told, enrichment programs don’t just help students achieve gains academically; they improve the student’s social and emotional functioning as well.
