Hagerstown District and Curriculum

In the elementary grades, the curriculum for Hagerstown’s schools is focused on basic fundamental skills in both English and Mathematics. Students learn reading, speaking, writing and listening in addition to mathematical problem solving. Classroom instruction also includes the fundamentals of science, art, social studies and health. The Reading and Language Arts program includes phonics, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. In Math, coursework centers on developing a sense of computational ability which is key to understanding all mathematical concepts.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hagerstown District Curriculum

In middle school, the curriculum builds on the fundamentals learned in K-5. In Reading, middle school students learn about literature and students read from classroom selections and their own choices. Reading assessments are through the Scholastic Reading Inventory and the Maryland School Assessment standards. In the Language Arts program, middle school students are supported as they develop their own voice in their writing efforts. Grammar and correct English and vocabulary are expected. In Math, students learn more advanced problem solving and the basics of geometry and algebra.

Students at the high school level have a curriculum that prepares them to enter the workforce or attend college. Students who qualify have the opportunity to attend the ESSENCE program which allows students to earn college credit as high school students. To graduate a student must have completed four English courses at the high school level, Geometry, Algebra, Biology, three Social Studies, World History, Physical Education, Health, Fine Arts, a Technology course.

Keeping Informed: Recent Hagerstown Educational News

  • Honoring Local History - Schools from across the Washington County Public School System presented special presentations to honor veterans. From music such as choir performances and symphonic band concerts to speeches to staff vs. students flag football games, and military displays, the school system is actively honoring the countries veterans on Veterans Day.
  • Community Giving - The South Hagerstown High School football team is involved in helping with the local Toys for Tots program each year. The team is involved along with their coaches in purchasing toys which will then be donated to local needy children.
  • Summer Programs - Students in the Washington County School District have a number of options for summer enrichment learning. There are courses to help students increase their strength in core academics which are also complemented by options that allow exploration in innovative subjects. These programs are updated yearly and connect with major district learning initiatives.

The National Museum of Education is a great resource for both parents and children. There are all sorts of activities and events to learn about. Budding inventors can also find out about different competitions such as the Bubble Wrap Competition for Young Inventors and the Rubber Band Contest. The Rubber Band Contest which is administered by the National Museum of Education is for children ages 5-8. Kids who come up with the most creative invention using rubber bands can win up to $2500 in prize money.
