Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hailey District Curriculum

English language arts includes a focus on literacy and challenging students with different types of texts. Students read classic literature, stories, and poems in English class, but also nonfiction texts in all subject areas. This prepares student to read, analyze, and write about all kinds of texts at a higher level when they graduate from high school. Students also write analytical essays, using evidence from the text to support their claims. Vocabulary is stressed across all grade levels in that students continue to learn how better to communicate.

In mathematics classes, student work deeply on fewer topics in each grade so that students have a full understanding before moving on to the next concept. Students are asked not only to memorize formulas but to learn the foundations of mathematics and why the formulas work. They are also required to show their work. These skills are then applied to real-world situations so that students learn strategies for solving problems which they can apply in their post-secondary education and the workforce.

Chalk Talk: College Resume

A college resume is a one-page, easy to scan list of extracurricular activities. It is meant to be an introduction tot the student and give a good overview of what type of student and person they are. The formatting can vary, but it should follow certain key basic rules. For example, the applicant’s name, address, contact information, and grade point average should be at the top, centered. The rest of the page should be activities grouped by major themes. Remember that some themes have more impact than others: Sports, for example, is fine, but Leadership Activities, which can include being a team captain, is better. Generally, it’s best to arrange them from most compelling or relevant on down. So a student athlete might lead with a section on Leadership, including being a captain, or Awards and Honors, or maybe even Sports Commitments to highlight the student’s commitment and involvement.
