Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hampstead District Curriculum
The Carroll County Public Schools have adopted the Common Core Standards which emphasize mathematic problem-solving across major math topics and literacy integrated with other communication skills such as writing, speaking and listening. Each set of goals aims to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning skills in the students as well, and is accomplished by scaffolding the curriculum and accessing prior knowledge.
Students also have to stay on a strict reading schedule in order to complete the work in the time allotted. A main focus of the literature selections is non-fiction pieces. This is an important genre for students to master because of the amount of reading required in their Science and Social Studies classes. At the end of most large reading selections, students will have to complete some sort of culminating project as determined by the teacher. Teachers show students the many strategies that good readers use along with the skills they will need to analyze what they read.

I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!

Chalk Talk: What Is STEM Education?
Many school and educational companies offer STEM or STEM-related programs and camps that further develop students’ understanding and application in these areas. Consider if your child shows a lot of interest in any of the subjects of science, math, engineering or technology. Another derivation on this concept is STEAM programs that also integrate the arts into the subjects. The goal is to make sure students see how different subjects are drawn upon to create works of art, build bridges, and solve problems throughout the world. The curriculum lends to a hands-on, project oriented approach that many students take well to. For students particularly interested in these subjects, your child will continue to improve on what they know and can do and stay interested in subjects they’re already drawn to.
