Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hanahan District Curriculum

The Math standards focus students on fewer standards, but invite them to mastery at a greater depth. In their classes students will study a narrow scope of concepts so they can increase retention and understanding. They will require less review of these ideas in the future as a result. Central topics include numerical operations, algebra, geometry, and probability/statistics – the focus on these from elementary through high school give students the necessary skills to complete advanced work.

In English Language Arts, students read and write about a variety of works encompassing both literature and non-fiction. They learn to synthesize what they read and are able to use this knowledge in all the content areas, such as science and social studies. Writing is also a significant portion of the curricular emphasis and students learn how to write in narrative, persuasive and informational modes. This ability will help them to be successful in college and the workforce.

Hanahan District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The vision of the Berkeley County Public School District is to “empower students to be successful in a highly competitive world.” This vision fits nicely with the Common Core State Standards, which they have adopted in Math and English Language Arts, because the Common Core seeks to prepare students to compete globally. Beyond the core, students have a great many electives and extracurriculars to round out their educational experience.

We currently cover the following Hanahan-area school district: Berkeley County School District.

Chalk Talk: Paying for College

It is never too early or too late to start preparing to pay for postsecondary education. Many graduates today are bogged down with student loans, but with hard work and careful planning a student can graduate from college with little or no debt. The most obvious way is to start saving early; however working a part-time job during the semester and full-time over the summers while in school can help offset the cost. There are also many scholarships available through universities and online searches. Taking time each day to find and apply for scholarships can help students pay for their schooling. With a little effort and a lot of planning, students can enter the job market without student loans.
