Harleysville District and Curriculum
Students in the Souderton Area School District receive a quality education from kindergarten through grade twelve. In elementary school, a large emphasis is placed on reading and writing as well as numeration and math. The curriculum is designed so that students follow through on what they learn throughout their years. Students also learn how to use technology and learn about how to innovate with technology. Students also gain a foundation in the sciences as well as history and other subjects according to regulations presented by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Harleysville District Curriculum
Middle school students learn in a unique environment where each student is taught by a team of teachers, each responsible for their own subject but together, in a team format, care for the needs of their students. Students learn in groups assigned to these groups of teachers to help provide a better learning environment for students in core subjects. They study English, math, social studies, and world languages once in 8th grade. In other classes they learn physical education, health, technology education, and other required courses.
High school students have many opportunities to choose electives based on their chosen Career Pathway. All high school students take core classes, but they may select core classes at different levels of difficulty according to their Career Pathway. Honors and AP courses are offered as well as many electives in Technology, Engineering, Business, Health, and many others. Students are thus prepared for career or vocation outside of high school.

Chalk Talk: Helping Your Child with Word Problems
Your child comes home from school stuck on a tough word problem in math. You don’t know the material well and are afraid to offer help. Don’t worry! There are things that you can always do to help your child with their word problems. First ask your child what they need to find. Math problems typically have a specific answer. What is the answer they are looking for? It may be someone’s age or how long a bridge is or some other quantity, who knows, but there will be something or several things specific that they must find. Next ask them to carefully read the problem again to discover what they already know. A word problem should always present known information to help you start laying out the problem. Now, your student must use these two pieces of information together, what they need to find and what they know, to formulate some sort of equation or set of equations which will lead them to the correct answer.
