Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Harrisburg District Curriculum

The Harrisburg School District uses two different Math which are based on using real world applications to illustrate math concepts. The strategy is designed so that teachers and students are all progressing through the same material. Science education also stresses practical application along with the development of conceptual understanding. Language Arts is arranged so that literacy and communication are broadly developed.

Students within the same class may all have different strengths and instruction should illustrate concepts using different strategies. For example, some students will remember the letters in a word by recognizing the shape of letters and how they look. Those students may benefit by using a system where words and letters are colored for emphasis. Still others will react more to difference is the way letters sound, and some students will need to practice writing the letters or using a sand tray to really learn them.

Keeping Informed: Recent Harrisburg Educational News

  • Students Learn About Health Risks of Lead - Primary students in the Harrisburg School District learned about the dangers like lead and mold in painted walls in a program developed with the Pennsylvania Health Department and local health providers. They attended special assemblies in their schools to find ways to recognize the problem and ways to be safe. They received special kits to test old paint in older buildings.
  • Health and Wellness Grant - Every school in the Harrisburg School District now has supplies for nurses, as well as healthy snacks, thanks to donations from a nationwide pharmacy chain based close by to the city. This will help students make better food choices, and follow good wellness practices. Harrisburg students also have the opportunity to begin training in healthcare because of this special grant.
  • The River Is Their Classroom - High school students in a Harrisburg School District program learned firsthand about the dangers of pollution while floating down their local river. Lessons combine an unusual field trip with real-world practices in ecology. They learn important concepts about how the environment is affected by what people choose to do.

Chalk Talk: Why Are There So Many Instructional Approaches

Effective teachers use many different ways to teach the concepts and skills students need to learn. Some learn best by what they see, others learn by what they hear, and still others learn best by making something or teaching another student about what they know. For example, some students can learn math facts by drawing pictures, using graphics and color, while others need to hear them; perhaps by singing a rap song or rhyme. Still others make up dances based upon number facts, or build a math calculator to illustrate the point. Skilled tutors can find methods that are the best fit for each student.
