Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Harrisonburg District Curriculum

Focusing on the world close at hand, students in Harrisonburg City Public Schools learn about science. In the early years they learn about seasons, nearby animals, senses and classification. As they continue on, their world expands and contracts as they discover weathering, plants, matter, atoms and sound and light. The teachers use a hands-on approach to teaching science, including a unit on trout in the classroom. These students are taught the wonders of the world around them from the tiniest atom to the vastness of the universe.

In Mathematics, Harrisonburg City Public Schools, number recognition begins in kindergarten. After these children learn how to count and write their numbers up to one hundred, they are then taught how to use these numbers in equations or in graphs as they record daily temperature, the lunch count or attendance. By second grade, they learn about fractions and these concepts are used as students learn about measurements, decimals, and geometry.

Chalk Talk: Tech Skills Needed By High School Students

Technology surrounds youth today; however, some of it is more important than other. Today’s high school students do need some technology skills to succeed, and here is an idea of what is considered most important. Keyboarding or typing is essential for any high school or college student, especially with all the essays and research papers that they need to complete. Creating spreadsheets is another common skill that is needed in today’s world, especially the basic formula and graphing programs, along with PowerPoint and e-mail etiquette. Finally, some knowledge of basic computer upkeep is helpful, since the computer is the student’s lifeline. This entails knowing how to update software, check for viruses and replace printer cartridges.
