Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hasbrouck Heights District Curriculum
The curriculum was developed to provide students with diverse and challenging educational experiences that align with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These standards establish grade-level benchmarks for what students should learn, know and be able to do. Standards are in place for seven content areas: world languages, technology, 21st Century life and careers, health and physical education, visual and performing arts, science and social studies.
A key component of the math curriculum is a comprehensive study of geometry. In the elementary grades students acquire the ability to identify and describe shapes, identify lines and angles, and graph points on a coordinate plane. The middle school curriculum focuses on the skills needed to calculate volume and surface area, acquiring an understanding of congruence, and the ability to apply the Pythagorean theorem. Once in high school, students acquire advanced knowledge and skills. Students learn how to solve problems involving right angles, apply theorems about circles, and use geometric shapes and their properties to describe objects.

Chalk Talk: Parental Involvement Helps Students
Studies show that one of the most important factors for determining a child’s success in school is the level to which their parents are involved in the educational process. Children whose parents actively engage with them at home and maintain communication with teachers perform better across the board. These students achieve better grades and perform better on standardized tests, regardless of their socioeconomic status, ethnicity or the education level of their parents. Additionally, students who have actively engaged parents complete their homework on time, have better attendance in school and have fewer discipline issues. By simply checking in with your child, helping with their homework and communicating with their teacher, you can give your child a better chance of achieving academic success and confidence.
