Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hastings District Curriculum

In the world languages curriculum, students work in one-on-one situations to enhance their understanding of common words, phrases, and gestures, and build their vocabularies and grammatical understanding as well. The interpretive realm focuses on developing improved reading skills. Students also engage in writing projects to help them acquire proficiency in reading and writing in a second language. The curriculum also helps learners acquire a better understanding of cultural and social aspects of language study.

Hastings’ art curriculum helps elementary school students develop a strong understanding of the foundational ideas of the arts. Learners identify various art forms, including dance, painting, singing, and playing an instrument. Students get an opportunity to explore and learn in each of these areas in order to develop an appreciation for the time and work each medium takes to master. In the visual arts, students learn how to use tools and materials like brushes and canvases to create art that expresses an individual idea or opinion.

Chalk Talk: Evaluating Four-Day School Weeks

Many school districts are working on developing new calendars that get away from the traditional five-day a week, nine-month a year setup. In about 100 school districts, the new calendar is based on a four-day school week. This setup is nothing new. Districts in rural areas, particularly in the west, have had four-day school weeks for decades in order to account for children that needed to help tend farms and ranches. Other rural districts adopted a four-day week to allow athletes to participate in traveling sports on Fridays without missing class. As this type of calendar has become more popular, other benefits have become obvious. Fridays can be used by faculty members to plan, coordinate programs, and participate in continuing education. Study halls can be held on Fridays as well, allowing kids that have fallen behind to more easily catch up. The four-day school week is also less expensive, saving on costs for busses, substitute teachers, utilities, and the like.
