Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hastings District Curriculum

In the early years of primary reading, the students are immersed in print, and learn ways to demonstrate their knowledge of print concepts. Using oral language activities, students learn phonemic awareness, as well as begin reading texts using one-to-one word recognition, fluency, and intonations. Vocabulary acquisition is also focused upon in the primary grades, and students use the new vocabulary and apply it to their comprehension of the text.

In Mathematics, in the early grades, students explore how numbers work as they manipulate whole numbers to show basic operational abilities. They will learn how to count in various ways, and they will become familiar with different patterns, geometric shapes, and the use of data in graphing. As students progress, they will study relationships between numbers and properties, more advanced methods for measurement and computation, and ways to interpret data.
