Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hattiesburg District Curriculum

Hattiesburg Public Schools help students, from kindergarten through graduation, with their understanding of Mathematics. They use a variety of books, technology and manipulatives such as geoboards, pattern blocks and measuring tools to assist students as they go through skills such as counting, equations, and analysis. Provided with these tools, students are able to learn and practice skills so they may obtain a firm grasp of mathematical knowledge.

In the area of Language Arts, students are presented with five areas of study: reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. At the beginning of their education at Hattiesburg Public Schools, children are introduced to these areas through a variety of literature, including poetry, the media and technology. By the time they graduate, students are exposed to examples of literature from Mississippi, African-American literature, and literature from around the world, and have the opportunity to take accelerated classes in literature and composition.

Chalk Talk: Breakfast Ideas for the School Child

Sometimes it is difficult to provide the proper breakfast to help a child succeed at school. With a few new ideas, perhaps the reluctant eater will look forward to breakfast and their school day. With the varieties of quick oatmeal that are on the market, it is fairly easy to give a child a tasty choice with this quick, hot breakfast. Bagels with flavored cream cheese, or yogurts, either plain or with fruit or granola, are other ways to provide a quick, but nutritious, breakfast choice which will help send the child off with energy to begin their day.
