Chalk Talk: Value of Volunteerism

Volunteering one’s time to help those less fortunate offers many benefits to the recipients of the good will. However, those who volunteer also garner a lot of benefits from their kind actions. Studies show that volunteerism is a great way to boost self-esteem and self-confidence. Helping others fosters feelings of self-worth and contributes to an improved self-concept. Volunteering also offers an opportunity to learn a new skill or trade, which may help inform kids of areas of interest to consider when thinking about a future career. There are academic benefits as well. Volunteerism teaches students skills like time management, communication, and working as part of a team. Students with volunteer experience also have a leg up on other students when it comes to applying for scholarships or applying to colleges because devoting one’s time to others is a highly sought-after quality by many scholarship committees and admissions officers.
