Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hauppauge District Curriculum
English language arts is a central component of the Hauppauge curriculum. English students engage in studies that provide them with college and career-ready reading skills. Students learn how to glean key ideas and details from texts, and also acquire the ability to make logical inferences from that information. Learners examine theme and explain the various methods that writers use to develop theme over the course of a story. The craft and structure of writing is also explored. Students work with technical, connotative, and figurative words and phrases, learning to determine their meaning from the context in which they appear.
Hauppauge students also participate in a health curriculum. Students devise a better understanding of human growth and development. This includes the various physical, mental, and social changes that children experience as they get older. Family life is explored as well, with students identifying features and characteristics of their families that are a positive influence in their life. Responsible health behaviors are identified, including the selection of healthy foods.

Chalk Talk: Value of Volunteerism
Volunteering one’s time to help those less fortunate offers many benefits to the recipients of the good will. However, those who volunteer also garner a lot of benefits from their kind actions. Studies show that volunteerism is a great way to boost self-esteem and self-confidence. Helping others fosters feelings of self-worth and contributes to an improved self-concept. Volunteering also offers an opportunity to learn a new skill or trade, which may help inform kids of areas of interest to consider when thinking about a future career. There are academic benefits as well. Volunteerism teaches students skills like time management, communication, and working as part of a team. Students with volunteer experience also have a leg up on other students when it comes to applying for scholarships or applying to colleges because devoting one’s time to others is a highly sought-after quality by many scholarship committees and admissions officers.
