In addition to standard classes, the district provides accelerated learning opportunities to students who meet requirements, in order to ensure that all learning levels are accommodated.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Havelock District Curriculum

Craven County Schools are highly committed to implementing innovative teaching methods to enhance instruction and learning. For example, recently, a third grade classroom at Trent Park Elementary wondered what type of material Martin Luther King, Jr. would release on his social media accounts if they had existed in his time. Students conducted short research projects on the impacts Martin Luther King, Jr. made and, instead of writing up reports, took the points-of-view of Dr. King.

The high school program allows students to take what they have learned during middle school and, thinking about their interests and future goals, to plan a course of study that will help them transition to post-secondary life. Students can take an Honors or Advanced Placement track that increases the rigor and independence expected of students. They may also participate in the Career Clusters program that helps them find the right electives that will provide them with a stepping stone into a career or future learning opportunity.

Chalk Talk: Student Feedback

It is important to provide feedback on students’ performance, which can help explain the grades they received. The teacher comments should describe some things the student did well and what he/she could improve upon. Following is an example of teacher feedback on a middle school student who received a cumulative grade of a ‘D’ on a social studies unit. During this unit, each student has completed several projects, researching the country of his or her choice. The purpose of this unit was not only for the students to learn about their countries—as well as others—but also to work on their writing, research, and presentation skills. [Student’s name] has shown a commitment towards working on her research skills, but improvements in this area are still required so that she can become more efficient when researching information. She has a good grasp of how to support her answers with details and fully respond to questions. To improve her writing, she needs reinforcement in the area of organization and coherence.
