Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Haverhill District Curriculum

The district uses The Language and Literacy Instructional Framework for Literature and the Content Areas (K-8). The framework consists of reading workshops, writing workshops and language/word study. Teachers incorporate reading and writing instructional strategies to assist students with comprehending text. Various genres of text are used in the instructional framework.

Improving literacy skills is critical for academic success. Learners may enhance their comprehension and fluency levels through writing and reading workshops. These workshops allow students to work independently and collaboratively to improve reading skills. Students also work across various content areas and literary genres to improve comprehension. Particular emphasis is placed on grammar, vocabulary, revision and editing skills. Students must infer and identify literary devices to analyze a variety of text. Assessments are given throughout the school year to monitor a learner's improvements in literary skills.

Haverhill District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Haverhill Public School follows the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework. The school district uses curriculum maps to align curriculum, instruction and assessments. Instruction is based on the objectives within the curriculum which specify precise learning goals for all students, but allow teachers to use different approaches with different students. Students are assessed with formal and informal assessment in the classroom throughout the school year. Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessments are given in each school to assess the academic progress of students in core subject areas.

We currently cover the following Haverhill-area school district: Haverhill Public Schools.

Chalk Talk: Supporting Local Schools

If your students attend public schools, you have a vested interest in making sure that they are the best they can be. In some cases, this may mean working for facility improvements such as building or remodeling. In other cases, it may mean working to improve the academic standing of a school by helping with tutoring or reading programs and encouraging teachers who excel in the classroom. Another way to support local districts is by encouraging school community partnerships - they could be with arts organizations, local non-profits, or areas businesses that offer internships or job shadowing. Above all, you can make sure that your own student is prepared for the challenges of education and are able to excel regardless of the circumstances.
