Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hazleton District Curriculum

In Language Arts, an expectation for learning would be in that Grade 3 students are not only expected to master content and read fluently at their grade level, but they also begin to develop critical thinking and reading skills. By eighth grade they begin taking notes in order to summarize main points and supporting ideas as they listen, a valuable skills that can be applied whether students attend college, or attend meetings for employment.

The Math curriculum shows similar attention to detail in a spiral curriculum. For example, in Grade 4 students learn to round numbers and use place value. By middle school, they demonstrate understanding with scientific notation. In Sciences such as chemistry and physics, students apply estimation and scientific notation to form hypotheses about volume and density. Each subject relies on a foundation of knowledge upon which critical thinking skills may develop.
