Heath District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The Rockwall Independent School District provides a comprehensive education for all its students and offers them many chances to excel. The core curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) which provide the broad grade-level objectives and defining skills and knowledge that students should master each year. Student success in core academics is measured on statewide assessments and are used to ensure that students are properly prepared for the next year or for college academics. In high school, when students have demonstrated proficiency in their core learning, a wider range of college and career preparatory choices are available.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Heath District Curriculum
The Mathematics and Science curriculum of Rockwall Independent School District was recently upgraded, and students are taught a set of individual units each school year that emphasize the relationship of math and science to world events. Students are also expected to understand how technology is integrated into these events. Basic principles for both math and science are framed developing critical thinking and problem solving skills. This also allows for project based work and the integration of engineering concepts.
The Social Studies curriculum introduces students to important concepts such as politics, history, economics, sociology, and psychology. It also serves as an access point for the development of literacy skills in foundational and informational texts. Studying the primary texts of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and the Constitution is a part of the expectations. Students also develop academic research skills by using primary sources, conducting library research, and working on projects and presentations.

Chalk Talk: Selecting Courses
The classes that a student chooses to take shed a lot of light on the student’s interests, work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and likelihood for success in college. Of course, there can be other factors at play, such as availability of classes and scheduling issues, but these can, and should, be addressed with a short note. If a student has chosen to take rigorous classes within their future major, this tells the admissions committee that this is a serious student who is willing to challenge themselves and work hard. These classes can vary in their degree of difficulty, of course, depending on the student’s interests, though Advanced Placement and Honors classes tend to be considered rigorous, no matter what field of study they fall within.
