Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Henderson District Curriculum

The new Common Core standards for Language Arts strongly emphasize preparing students for college and work-related reading by dividing reading assignments into “literature” and “informational” categories. Starting in elementary school, students learn the difference between “real” and “pretend” and use informational texts to learn about science and real-world connections. By the time they reach high school, the emphasis on informational texts ensures they will be able to navigate more complex documents that integrate technology and engineering all as part of their reading assignments.

Though flexible, the Science standards and benchmarks in CCSD elementary schools strongly emphasize understanding the nature of science. Young students learn to make observations, differentiate between fact and opinion, and draw conclusions. This prepares children for high school, where they will receive instruction in biology, geoscience, chemistry, and physics.

Chalk Talk: Developing Non-cognitive Skills for Success

Students that excel in schools often draw from a basic skill set that cannot be measured on tests. Non-cognitive skills like self-discipline, self-confidence, and even something as basic as punctuality can ensure the success of students during their time in the classroom. Parents can work with their children to develop these skills by using words and modeling behaviors to connect actions to consequences, supporting a healthy lifestyle and positive self-image, and talking to children about how to handle emotions and stress.
