Chalk Talk: The Importance of Health and Physical Education

Health and physical education curriculum helps students develop the skills they need to have optimal physical and mental health. The middle school curriculum focuses specifically on honing gross motor skills such that students can learn movement patterns and skills needed to participate in physical activities. Gymnastics, dance, individual and team sports, and games facilitate the development of these skills. Students work on fine motor skills as well. Children learn how to hit a volleyball, dribble a basketball, and pass a soccer ball, among other sports-related skills. Students in the middle grades also develop an understanding of why exercise and physical fitness is necessary for overall health. Learners explore how one’s level of physical fitness can directly impact their mental and emotional health as well.
